Mitchell Chepchumba, a 17-year-old Form Four student at AIC Chebisaas Girls in Kobujoi, Nandi County, has been admitted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) after reportedly being severely beaten by her computer teacher using a computer cable.
The male teacher is said to have assaulted her last Tuesday, claiming she failed to run when asked to. She sustained serious injuries to her head and back. According to her mother, Peris Koech, Mitchell first called her on Wednesday morning, complaining of severe pain. She was initially taken to a local dispensary in Kobujoi, but her condition worsened.
On Thursday, the school’s headmistress, Jane Kandie, called Peris(mother), urging her to seek further medical attention for her daughter. She was taken to Kapsabet Referral Hospital on Friday night for treatment, but due to inadequate care, Peris and human rights activist Kimutai Kirui were forced to remove the student and seek urgent medical attention at MTRH.
“Her condition was worsening, yet no proper treatment was being given. We had to act fast,” Kirui stated.
Mitchell was admitted to MTRH on Wednesday, where she has since undergone a series of scans and an MRI. She remains visibly shaken and uncontrollably trembling, though the official medical report on her condition is yet to be released.
Peris, a widow, expressed her anguish over her daughter’s suffering and the possibility of lasting injuries. “I am worried about her healing, and I want justice. No child deserves to go through this,” she said.
Kirui condemned the brutal assault and commended MTRH for their swift response. “I appreciate the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Philip Kirwa, for ensuring the student received medical attention in under 30 minutes,” he said.
He further called on the Ministry of Education to take immediate action against the teacher. “Such acts of brutality have no place in our schools. The government must ensure teachers adhere to discipline policies that do not violate children’s rights,” he added.

The matter has been reported to Kapsabet Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
