The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), in collaboration with the National Police Service and other enforcement agencies, has seized 233 bags of counterfeit fertilizer worth Ksh 23 million in Molo, Nakuru County.

During the operation, two suspects were arrested and are set to be arraigned in court.

Speaking to the press, ACA Executive Director Dr. Robin Mbugua emphasized that the crackdown aims to protect farmers from counterfeit farm inputs and ensure food security.

“This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to shield farmers from unscrupulous traders selling fake fertilizers, which have significantly affected crop yields. Many farmers invest heavily in agricultural inputs, only to suffer losses due to counterfeit products,” Dr. Mbugua said.

A media spot check revealed that the seized counterfeit fertilizer, originally government-subsidized (GOK) fertilizer, had been repackaged and fraudulently sold under the Yara brand, in clear violation of the law.

Dr. Mbugua further assured farmers that the ACA would intensify operations to ensure only genuine fertilizers reach the market during this critical planting season.

“We are committed to eliminating counterfeit agricultural products. Our teams will continue conducting nationwide crackdowns to ensure that farmers receive high-quality inputs that will enhance productivity,” he stated.

Farmers in Nakuru County have frequently fallen prey to conmen selling substandard fertilizers, leading to significant financial losses and poor harvests. Authorities have urged farmers to remain vigilant and purchase fertilizers from authorized dealers to avoid being duped.
