The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has announced that President Yoweri Museveni is set to pick nomination forms from the party’s Electoral Commission as he prepares to retain his dual roles as NRM chairman and presidential candidate in the 2026 general elections.
Museveni, who has been in power since January 1986 following the Battle of Kampala, is one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, with a tenure spanning nearly four decades.
His leadership has brought periods of economic growth and relative stability, but has also been marred by accusations of authoritarianism, suppression of political dissent, human rights violations, corruption, and military involvement in regional conflicts.
A defining feature of Museveni’s rule has been the constitutional amendments that eliminated presidential term and age limits—moves widely criticized as undemocratic efforts to entrench his grip on power.
On May 30, 2025, Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni issued a rare public apology during a televised address, acknowledging the NRM’s past mistakes.
Their appeal for forgiveness was particularly directed at the people of Buganda, a region long fraught with political tensions.
The address, marked by humility and a call for spiritual and national renewal, emphasized the couple’s desire for healing, unity, and a return to the NRM’s founding goals of social and economic transformation. They reaffirmed their commitment to steering Uganda toward continued development and national reconciliation.
