The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has announced that it will soon start performing cardiac surgeries on patients.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Philip Kirwa, revealed that the facility will perform a total of 10 cardiac surgeries on patients, bringing relief to many who have been forced to seek similar services in far-off countries.

According to Kirwa, many patients who visit the facility with heart conditions will greatly benefit from this new service.

“We are excited to offer cardiac surgeries to our patients, and we believe that this will ease the burden on those who have had to travel abroad for similar services,” he said.

A spot check by the media revealed that many patients have been traveling to distant countries to seek cardiac care, a trend that is set to change with the introduction of this new service at MTRH.

Kirwa also expressed pride in the appointment of Dr. Ouma Oluga as the Principal Secretary for Health, citing that it is a great achievement for the hospital.

“As a medic, Dr. Oluga’s appointment will enable him to handle health matters with ease, and we are happy to have him on board,” he said.

Dr. Oluga, who toured the hospital, expressed satisfaction with its operations.

On April 28, 2025, Dr. Ouma Oluga visited MTRH to evaluate its specialized healthcare delivery and support for Kenya’s UHC goals.

He disclosed that plans are underway to decentralize health operations, allowing MTRH to focus on specialized cases.

“By decentralizing health operations, we aim to reduce the backlog of patients seeking services at MTRH, which is the second-largest healthcare facility in the country,” he said.

As a major referral hospital, MTRH serves patients from as far as East African countries, and this new development is expected to ease the burden on patients seeking specialized care.

The introduction of cardiac surgeries at MTRH is a significant milestone in the hospital’s history, and it is expected to improve the quality of healthcare services offered to patients.
