The Ministry of Environment has raised concern over increasing pollution around Lake Naivasha, citing waste emissions from nearby farms and hotels.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa said the lake, which is fed by the Aberdare Ranges and Mau Forest, is in a deteriorating state due to improper chemical use and hotel effluent discharge.

Speaking during the launch of a Ksh. 230 million restoration project, CS Barasa highlighted the alarming degradation of wetlands, rising pollution, and biodiversity loss in the area.

She warned that if left unchecked, the country could suffer immense environmental and economic losses. Barasa emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting ecosystem services and called for collective action.

The restoration initiative aims to enhance governance, protect wetlands, and promote sustainable land management.

The CS noted that previous efforts faced setbacks due to challenges in agriculture and fisheries, making the current program crucial.

Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha stressed the importance of protecting the Aberdares, which supply 80% of the water flowing into Lake Naivasha.

He pointed to threats like deforestation and blocked river pathways, saying many dams now require desilting.

Samson Toniok, CEO of NETFUND, said the project will address issues across all catchment areas. He revealed that 1,600 hectares of forest will be restored, and 2,700 farmers will receive support to adopt sustainable farming practices.

Nakuru Deputy Governor David Jones praised the project, saying it would have a significant positive impact on the local ecosystem.
