Kylian Mbappe has clinched the European Golden Shoe for the first time in his career, finishing ahead of Europe’s top scorers.
The French forward scored 31 league goals in his debut season with Real Madrid, securing the award with a brace in a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday.
Mbappe’s goals not only earned him La Liga’s Golden Boot but also propelled him past his closest rivals in the Golden Shoe race. His final tally earned him 62 points, based on UEFA’s weighted scoring system.
Meanwhile, Victor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon, who netted 39 league goals, finished second with 58.5 points. Although Gyokeres outscored Mbappe in total goals, his goals carried less weight due to Portugal’s lower UEFA league coefficient.
Mohamed Salah, representing Liverpool, finished third. He scored 29 goals, earning 58 points. To match Mbappe, Salah needed a hat-trick in Liverpool’s final game against Crystal Palace on Sunday. However, he scored just once in a 1-1 draw.
The UEFA points system awards two points per goal in the top five leagues — La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1. Leagues ranked sixth to 22nd, including the Portuguese Primeira Liga, earn 1.5 points per goal.
Gyokeres, linked with a move to Arsenal, couldn’t catch up since Sporting ended their league campaign a week earlier. He ended the season with 53 goals in 51 matches across all competitions, including a goal in Sporting’s 3-1 win over Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final.
Mbappe now becomes only the third Real Madrid player to win the Golden Shoe. He joins Hugo Sanchez (1989–90) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2010–11, 2013–14, 2014–15) on the elite list.
Here’s the final top five ranking for the 2024–25 season:
Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid) – 31 goals, 62 points
Victor Gyokeres (Sporting) – 39 goals, 58.5 points
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – 29 goals, 58 points
Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona) – 27 goals, 54 points
Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) – 26 goals, 52 points
