“We call upon the international community to conduct independent investigations on the massacre of the residents of Githurai, Nairobi, on the night of 25 May 2024, where more than one hundred people were killed,”

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for justice following the Githurai Massacre, which resulted in at least one hundred deaths immediately after yesterday’s anti-Finance Bill protest. The tragedy occurred following the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to the area.

“We call upon the international community to conduct independent investigations on the massacre of the residents of Githurai, Nairobi, on the night of 25 May 2024, where more than one hundred people were killed,” said LSK President Faith Odhiambo during a press briefing.

Odhiambo questioned the rationale behind the deployment of KDF to Githurai, which resulted in the killing of civilians, especially after the internet was shut down. “We demand answers to those questions. We cannot allow those lives to go uncounted. The people who caused those deaths must be held accountable,” she asserted.

She urged Kenyans to remain resilient, emphasizing that they are on their own and that the nation has endured difficult times. She encouraged citizens to defend their constitution and to remember the tragic events of the previous night.

Odhiambo also called on President Ruto to adopt a reconciliatory stance, unite Kenyans, heal the nation, and ensure justice is served. “We have currently five matters in court instituted by the Law Society of Kenya,” added an LSK member.

The Githurai Massacre has sparked widespread outrage among Kenyans, with many claiming that the Head of State violated the constitution by deploying the KDF without following the proper protocols. The country is now in mourning, grieving the loss of their compatriots killed by security officers during the nationwide anti-Finance Bill protests, and demanding justice for the deceased.
