During the recent demonstrations in Eldoret town, protesters stated that rejecting the finance bill is the only solution to halt the ongoing unrest. They believe that if the bill is passed, it will impose an undue burden on the entire population of the country.
“We, as the youth, are tired of this government and have suffered enough. A government that can’t protect its people from hunger is a useless government,” said one of the protesters.
The protesters targeted the nightclub Timber XO, owned by Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi. They broke in and looted the establishment, taking alcohol and various property of unknown value.
Police officers inside the club attempted to stop the looting by using rubber bullets, while those outside were overpowered by the massive crowd and refrained from using force.
“The police officers started using live bullets a short while after the rubber bullets,” said another protester.
Outside the club, a protester was shot, and several others sustained injuries. Additionally, another popular club in the area, Baniyas Square, also faced destruction, with protesters stoning it before police managed to stop further damage.
In response, Oscar Sudi stated, “I have never done anything bad to anybody and never even thought of destroying someone else’s property. I have nothing to worry about. I even heard that you want to go to my residence—proceed. You criminals know yourselves, but you used young children in the name of protests”He stated.
