Langas Member of County Assembly Francis Muya has asked Kenyans and leaders to reject the government’s plan to lease the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to a privately-owned company.

Muya who is also the assembly’s leader of the minority expressed concerns that if the airport is leased to the Adani Group, an Indian company, it might set a precedence for other state corporations.

“This is our national heritage, and it is the right time for us as leaders to ask ourselves what is good. The government should take responsibility. The management of JKIA and all airports should be left to the government,” Mwangi said.

The MCA now wants the government led by President William Ruto to come out and explain details of the deal that has sparked uproar amongst Kenyans.

It is alleged that the government is planning to lease JKIA to Adani Group, which will be allowed to renovate the facility and manage it for the next 30 years.
Kenyans and some leaders are however against the said deal.

Previously, President Ruto has defended the plan, insisting it will help give the airport a new face.

“Let’s be honest Kenyans, the airport we have in Nairobi is made of canvas. This is a temporary structure we built almost 7 years ago. Ethiopia have a brand new airport. Rwanda the same. It is the reason why we need to work with investors to have a new airport in Nairobi,” the president said in July during a town hall meeting in Mombasa.
