The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has firmly defended the ongoing doctors’ strike in Kiambu County, saying that the strike is both legal and justifiable on moral grounds following what the union terms continued abuse and neglect by the county leadership.
According to the union, doctors in the region are increasingly frustrated, faulting the county government for repeatedly failing to ensure their rights and protect their health.
KMPDU reiterated that the strike will go on until practical actions are undertaken to resolve the grievances of the doctors.
In a scathing post shared via their official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, July 25, 2025, KMPDU criticized the Kiambu County government for failing to meet long-standing grievances presented by doctors. They are delayed promotions, substandard health insurance quality, and constant threats of job loss and harassment.
“The Kiambu doctors’ strike is legitimate and justified by glaring problems: delayed career progression, substandard medical cover, perpetual trampling on the right to strike, and perpetual threats of job loss,” the union argued.
They also blamed the county government for systematic mismanagement, highlighting the current scenario as an epitome of a more sinister trend of disrespect towards healthcare workers.
“This is not a single failure. It is an indicator of a systemic culture of disrespect, neglect, and abuse by an administration that has proven itself incapable of responsible leadership,” the union charged, observing that confidence between the medical professionals and county officials has broken down.
Reaffirming its determination to battle for medic personnel, KMPDU declared that the era of silence is over. “There are no monarchs in Kiambu—we will not bow to anyone,” confidently declared the union.
Apart from being an advocate for the strike, the union disclosed it had formally submitted petitions to both the Governor’s Office and the Kiambu County Assembly, documenting escalating tension with the county government.
“This is not a plea—it’s a mandate. Kiambu doctors are not pleading—they are calling for action. We will not tolerate incompetence and apathy,” the union statement read.
KMPDU also reconfirmed its resolve to guard its members from any intimidation, vowing to keep county governments across the country on their toes.
“We know that oppression thrives on silence—this is why we keep on speaking out. And we won’t desist,” the statement continued.
