With a budget of Sh. 35 million, Dr. Oron plans to traverse all seven wards in the constituency, ensuring accessibility to medical care

On the 6th of May 2024, more than 1000 residents from Kisumu Central Constituency converged at two venues for a free medical camp organized by Dr. Joshua Oron, the local Member of Parliament.

This initiative responds to the pressing need for medical attention exacerbated by the ongoing six-week-long doctors’ strike.

Dr. Oron emphasized the scope of the three-day medical camp, aiming to serve 20,000 patients within and beyond the constituency. He elucidated, “The demand is high, which is why I have organized this camp to alleviate the impact of the ongoing strike on my constituents.”

With a budget of Sh. 35 million, Dr. Oron plans to traverse all seven wards in the constituency, ensuring accessibility to medical care. “We are taking healthcare services to the people’s doorsteps, hence the rotation across wards,” he affirmed.

The initial venues, Nyalenda SDA Church and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground, are the starting points, followed by subsequent locations such as Kibuye market, Manyatta Primary School, Lolwe Grounds, and Obunga Grounds.

Reflecting on his electoral promises, Dr. Oron underscored his commitment to improving healthcare. “I have collaborated with various partners who have contributed funds and medical equipment to aid our people during this crisis,” he stated.

Dr. Oron lamented the dire consequences of the strike, citing the tragic case of a cancer patient from his ward who succumbed to despair. “The deceased’s demise underscores the urgency of resolving this crisis,” he remarked.

Jackeline Auma, a concerned mother seeking treatment for her sick daughter, expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by the medical camp. “I am here hoping to find relief for my daughter, who has been suffering due to the unavailability of medical services,” she shared.

The medical camp offers a range of services including basic health triage, immunization, HIV testing and counseling, eye examinations, and screenings for cervical and breast cancer.

Notable partners supporting the initiative include Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Aga Khan Hospital, Bloom, and Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

As a member of the National Assembly Department of Health Committee, Dr. Oron called for a collaborative effort to resolve the ongoing strike.

He urged both the government and the doctors’ union to find a common ground for the welfare of Kenyans affected by the strike. “The government’s treatment of interns as students is untenable. Interns are essential to the healthcare system,” he asserted.
