Teachers in Elgeyo Marakwet County have Saturday benefited from a Free Medical Camp orchestrated by Minet-Kenya, an insurance brokerage firm.

Held at St. Patrick’s Iten Boys’ High School, the camp featured collaboration with several local private hospitals, including Top Hill, Reale, Bliss, and Palmcare Sinai, among others.
The teachers underwent comprehensive screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar levels, weight, and various other medical assessments, including optical and dental consultations. Moreover, they received assistance in verifying personal and dependents’ medical records.

Speaking to the press during the camp, Mr. Ronny Kipruto, Minet-Kenya’s North Rift Regional Manager, highlighted the significance of the event as a means of raising awareness among teachers, stating,

“Our objective today was to inform our teachers that these services are closer to them and to also introduce them to the hospitals around this place.” Mr. Kipruto further emphasized the success of similar endeavors in five other Kenyan counties, estimating a turnout of approximately 250 teachers, with potential for higher numbers under more favorable weather conditions.

Michael Nyambinya, a representative from the Teachers Service Commission in Elgeyo Marakwet County, expressed gratitude to Minet and its partners, recognizing the timely intervention in detecting and treating ailments to prevent extended teacher absences.

“This activity has come at a time when teachers are out of school, and there are so many opportunistic diseases nowadays,” remarked Nyambinya.

However, some teachers raised concerns regarding pharmaceutical supplies in the participating hospitals’ pharmacies, urging the insurer to ensure adequate stock levels.

“Sometimes you get attended to in some of these hospitals, and once you are at the pharmacy, you are asked to purchase drugs elsewhere because what you have been prescribed is out of stock,” noted Ms. Janet Wangila, a teacher at Kipsoen Secondary.

The Medical Camp for Teachers in Elgeyo Marakwet County underscores the invaluable role of public-private partnerships in promoting accessible healthcare services, particularly within underserved communities.
