Tension remains high in Kipkaren/Kipkenyo Ward following a week of violent demonstrations in which angry residents destroyed properties linked to area MCA David Letting, also known as Kokwas, over allegations of illegal acquisition of public utility land.

According to residents, sections of commercial buildings associated with the MCA were demolished by youth protesters, leaving traders counting losses estimated in the millions of shillings.

One of the affected business owners, a former employee of Raiply Woods, said he lost his entire pension investment after his wines and spirits outlet, Sarafina The Queen, was vandalized.

A Raiply retiree addresses the media in Kipkaren/Kipkenyo Ward, lamenting the loss of his entire pension investment after his business was destroyed during protests over alleged land grabbing.

“We have lost everything. My pension savings have gone down the drain because the MCA was too arrogant to engage his constituents. That is what has led to these losses,” he claimed.

Allegations of Land Grabbing and Intimidation

Residents have accused the MCA of grabbing public utility land and private property, claims that have fueled anger across the ward.

A widow, Esther Nyigei, alleged that her 97-acre parcel is under threat despite reporting the matter to relevant authorities.

Esther Nyigei, a widow from Kipkaren/Kipkenyo Ward, addresses the media, alleging attempts to grab her family land and appealing for government intervention and protection.

“We are crying for justice. I am not the only widow affected—many others are being disinherited and threatened. We have reported these cases, but no action has been taken,” she said.

Youth leaders, led by Dennis Kiptoo, also accused the MCA of reneging on campaign promises and forcefully taking over a public car wash project that had been allocated to them.

“The space was given to us by former Governor Jackson Mandago, but the MCA grabbed it and kicked us out. This is public land,” Dennis said.

Human Rights Concerns Raised

Human rights activists have now joined the dispute, calling for investigations and enforcement action.

Led by Kimutai Kirui, the group has demanded the demolition of structures allegedly built on public utility and riparian land along River Sosiani.

Kimutai Kirui addresses the media in Uasin Gishu County, calling for investigations into alleged land grabbing and urging authorities to uphold accountability and protect public land.

“There has been a public outcry from residents who have endured alleged abuses for years. We must hold public officers accountable and ensure thorough investigations into all complaints filed against the MCA,” Kirui stated.

He, however, urged residents to remain peaceful and avoid further destruction of property.

“We understand the frustrations, but lawlessness will only worsen the situation. We call for due process,” he added.

Another activist, Juma Akumu, accused local security agencies of bias and failing to protect victims.

Juma Akumu addresses the media in Uasin Gishu County, calling for an independent inquiry into alleged land grabbing and urging protection for residents seeking justice.

“We demand the immediate arrest of the MCA and the opening of an inquiry file to allow victims to report safely and receive protection,” Akumu said.

Claims of Violence and Security Compromise

Residents further allege that the MCA has been linked to multiple assault cases and accused him of operating with armed groups to intimidate dissenting voices—claims that remain unverified.

There are also accusations that local police stations, including those in the area, have been compromised, with victims allegedly being arrested after reporting incidents involving the MCA.

Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the situation.

MCA Responds Amid Rising Pressure

In a viral TikTok video circulating online, the MCA appeared to soften his stance, pledging to protect public land and allow youth access to farming spaces—remarks widely interpreted as an attempt to regain public trust.

He has also condemned the destruction of property, terming the protests unlawful.

However, residents remain defiant, vowing to protect public utilities, including a disputed parcel in Kipkaren earmarked for a market.

“We will not allow any more grabbing of public land. That space belongs to the community,” said one protester.

The dispute in Kipkaren/Kipkenyo Ward has been building over several months, with repeated allegations by residents and activists of land grabbing, human rights violations, and misuse of public resources.

The unrest escalated in recent weeks following renewed attempts to develop contested public land, triggering protests led largely by youth demanding accountability.

Police have since been deployed to guard premises linked to the MCA and prevent further destruction, as the situation remains volatile.

Residents say they will continue to push for accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling a prolonged political and legal battle in the area.
