Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing Talanta Stadium on schedule after inspecting ongoing construction works at the multi-billion-shilling facility, which is expected to serve as one of Kenya’s flagship venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The late-evening inspection allowed the Deputy President to assess progress under the stadium’s newly installed floodlights as contractors continue work on one of the country’s largest sports infrastructure projects.
Accompanied by project engineers, government officials and contractors, Kindiki toured key sections of the facility, receiving updates on construction milestones, safety standards and the projected completion timeline.
The inspection comes as Kenya accelerates preparations to co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the first time the three East African nations will jointly stage Africa’s premier football tournament. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded the hosting rights to the East African bid in September 2023 after evaluating infrastructure plans, government commitments and regional readiness.
Construction Reaches Advanced Stage
The latest images from the construction site show substantial progress across several sections of the stadium.
The distinctive exterior façade, inspired by the colors of the Kenyan flag and the country’s national shield, has largely taken shape, giving the venue a recognizable architectural identity.
Inside the stadium, installation of the roof structure, seating areas and floodlighting system is well advanced. Work has also progressed on the playing surface, with engineers preparing the pitch to meet international football standards.
Construction teams continue working on internal facilities, access roads, media areas, hospitality suites and supporting infrastructure required for hosting major international competitions.
Officials overseeing the project said the works remain on course, although no official completion date was announced during the inspection.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
Speaking during the visit, Kindiki said the government remains committed to ensuring the project is delivered within the required timelines while meeting international standards set by the Confederation of African Football and FIFA.
He said Talanta Stadium forms part of the government’s broader investment in sports infrastructure aimed at positioning Kenya as a competitive destination for international sporting events.
The Deputy President noted that modern stadiums are expected to generate economic benefits beyond football by creating employment opportunities during construction and operation, supporting local businesses and attracting international visitors.
Key Venue for AFCON 2027
Talanta Stadium is expected to become one of Kenya’s principal venues during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF requires host nations to provide stadiums that meet strict specifications covering seating capacity, player facilities, broadcasting infrastructure, security, medical services and spectator safety.
Kenya has intensified efforts to upgrade and construct sporting facilities following the successful East African bid to host the tournament jointly with Uganda and Tanzania.
Besides Talanta Stadium, the government is overseeing renovations at Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo National Stadium to ensure they comply with CAF requirements ahead of the continental competition.
Sports analysts say the investments could leave Kenya with a lasting legacy by improving facilities available for local leagues, youth development and international competitions long after AFCON concludes.
Beyond Football
Government officials say Talanta Stadium is envisioned as more than a football venue.
Once completed, the facility is expected to host athletics competitions, concerts, conferences and other large-scale events, strengthening Nairobi’s position as a regional hub for sports and entertainment.
The project is also expected to support the government’s agenda of expanding opportunities for young athletes by providing modern training and competition facilities capable of hosting elite-level events.
With construction progressing steadily and regular government inspections continuing, Talanta Stadium is emerging as one of Kenya’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, reflecting the country’s determination to deliver facilities that meet global standards ahead of AFCON 2027 and future international sporting events.
