A police station in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, was torched Thursday evening by enraged residents following the fatal police shooting of a protester earlier that day.

The violence marked a sharp escalation in nationwide unrest that has left more than 10 police facilities destroyed since June 25, June 27, 2025.

According to police, the protest began over a surge in cattle thefts but turned violent when demonstrators confronted officers. During the confrontation, one man was shot dead, sparking a retaliatory march to Ndunyu Njeru Police Station, which was set ablaze.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen responded with a stern warning, authorizing police to shoot anyone who attacks security installations.

“There were no peaceful protests,” he said. “This was well-planned violence meant to destroy, hurt people, and attack our country’s values and institutions.”

In addition to Kinangop, attacks have been reported at police stations in Juja, Villa, Molo, Ongata Rongai, Matuu, Mai Mahiu and Ol Kalou. Authorities confirmed five firearms were stolen from Dagoretti police post during a separate raid.

One of the most serious incidents unfolded near the Southern Bypass and Old Kikuyu Road, where rioters reportedly trucked in from Limuru and Kiambu blocked roads, set tires on fire, and burned multiple public buildings. Clashes with police led to one death and injuries to five officers. Rioters later dumped the deceased outside Kikuyu Police Station.

Police arrested 25 suspects during the unrest, including four at the Kikuyu Affordable Housing project where homes were damaged. Officers said they are pursuing additional suspects.

More than 500 people have been detained since the protests began, as the government vows to crack down on what it describes as coordinated, violent disruptions under the guise of demonstrations.
