Kericho Governor Eric Mutai was impeached on Wednesday after a majority vote in the county assembly.
The motion for his removal was introduced by Sigowet Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kiprotich Rogony, who cited serious allegations against the governor as the basis for the decision.
During the assembly session, Rogony highlighted that 31 out of the 47 MCAs supported the motion, a clear indication of the growing discontent among local representatives regarding Mutai’s leadership.
The assembly’s decision comes amidst increasing scrutiny of the governor’s conduct, particularly concerning allegations of “indecent and unnatural behaviour” involving female partners.
Rogony suggested that more revelations would surface during the upcoming Senate hearing, where the details of the allegations are expected to be discussed further.
“The governor has variously committed constitutional wrongs that subvert the structure of government and undermine the integrity of the office and even the constitution itself,” Rogony asserted, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
He indicated that the complainants are seeking anonymity at this stage, highlighting the sensitive nature of the allegations against the governor.
The impeachment motion has not only shaken the political landscape in Kericho but also raised concerns about governance and accountability in the region.
Critics of Mutai argue that his administration has been marred by controversies, eroding public trust in local leadership.
Supporters of the governor, however, have expressed disappointment, asserting that the impeachment is politically motivated and lacks substantive evidence.
The next steps involve the consideration of the senate of the impeachment motion, where the governor will have an opportunity to defend himself against the allegations.
This hearing is expected to attract significant public and media attention, as residents of Kericho and the wider Kenyan community await the outcome.
Governor Mutai’s impeachment marks a pivotal moment in Kericho’s political history, and it underscores the growing demand for ethical governance and accountability among elected officials.
