The Ministry of Health, through its Division of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH), is actively preparing for the upcoming National Forum on the Every Woman Every Newborn (EWENE) Plan.

This initiative aims to accelerate efforts in reducing maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality, striving for a healthier future for mothers and newborns across Kenya.

The EWENE Plan is a comprehensive strategy designed to address the major causes of maternal and neonatal deaths in Kenya, including hemorrhage, obstructed labor, and eclampsia.

By focusing on improving the quality of care and ensuring the availability of essential services, the plan seeks to achieve the ambitious 90-90-80-80 targets:

90% of women receiving skilled care during childbirth
90% of women receiving postnatal care within two days of delivery
80% of newborns receiving essential newborn care interventions
80% of newborns receiving postnatal care within two days of birth

These targets align with global commitments to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates.

In Kenya, the maternal mortality ratio stands at 362 per 100,000 live births, and the neonatal mortality rate is 22 per 1,000 live births, according to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2014.

The upcoming forum will bring together stakeholders from various sectors to discuss strategies for achieving these targets.

Key topics will include enhancing the quality of maternal and newborn care services, ensuring the availability of essential commodities and equipment, and strengthening health systems to support the delivery of these services.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving these goals.

“Together, we work towards achieving the 90-90-80-80 targets for improved maternal and neonatal health,” the Ministry stated. “Let’s champion this cause!”

As Kenya continues its commitment to improving maternal and newborn health, the EWENE Plan represents a critical step toward reducing preventable deaths and ensuring a healthier future for all mothers and newborns.
