Ambassador Njuguna Mahugu, a long-serving diplomat who represented Kenya on the global stage for over 30 years, has passed away.
Mahugu died on Sunday, October 13, 2024, in a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after a brief illness.
His death marks the end of a distinguished career in Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he held key positions that shaped Kenya’s foreign relations.
Ambassador Mahugu was a central figure in Kenya’s diplomacy, having served as High Commissioner to several countries and as the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations.
His service in these roles showcased his commitment to enhancing Kenya’s influence in international diplomacy and global governance.
In recognition of his outstanding work, Mahugu was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) of Kenya, a national honor recognizing exceptional public service.

His leadership and negotiation skills were instrumental in advancing Kenya’s interests on the global stage, particularly at the United Nations, where he played a key role in deliberations on peacekeeping, sustainable development, and humanitarian aid.

His passing has left a void in both Kenya’s diplomatic community and the global circles he was a part of.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Njoki Mahugu, and their four children, Maxine, Christian, Fred, and Christopher, as well as two granddaughters, Arielle and Amira.
Mahugu’s family roots run deep in Kenya, being the son of the late Mahugu Njuguna and Ruth Wanjeri Mahugu, and the brother of Eunice Waithera Karwigi, Monica Nduta Mahugu, and Mary Wanjiru Mahugu, among others who predeceased him.
Ambassador Mahugu’s passing is a significant loss for Kenya, especially at a time when the country’s diplomatic relations with other nations are expanding.
His funeral service was held on October 26, 2024, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, followed by his burial at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield.
As Kenya and the global diplomatic community reflect on Mahugu’s legacy, his contributions to international diplomacy will be remembered as an enduring testament to his lifetime of service.
