Kenya’s National Women’s Cycling Team has achieved a historic victory, clinching the top spot at the Burundi Cycling Ranking Tour.

The team, comprising Monica Jelimo, Kendra Masiga, Nancy Akinyi, Alice Julia, and Grace Wairimu, outshone competitors from seven nations to secure the coveted title.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen lauded the team for their outstanding performance, calling it a milestone moment for Kenya.

“Hats off to our Kenya National Women’s Cycling Team for this remarkable victory,” he said. “This triumph solidifies Kenya’s status as a powerhouse in sports.”

The victory comes on the heels of Kenya’s successful hosting of the 2024 Confederation of Africa Cycling (CAC) Road Championships earlier this year. The high-profile event not only showcased the nation’s organizational capabilities but also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a vibrant cycling culture.

Murkomen highlighted the broader significance of cycling beyond the competitive arena. “Cycling has immense potential to promote wellness, combat climate change, and position Kenya for greater success in global competitions like the Olympics,” he stated.

Kenya’s win at the Burundi tour demonstrates the growing talent and determination of its athletes in a sport that has traditionally been dominated by other regions. The victory also underscores the importance of continued investment in sports infrastructure, training programs, and talent development to sustain and build on these successes.

The team’s triumph is expected to inspire the next generation of Kenyan cyclists and boost the sport’s popularity across the nation. It also strengthens Kenya’s bid to make a significant impact on the global stage, including the Olympics and other international competitions.

With cycling gaining momentum as a competitive sport in Kenya, the government has committed to enhancing support for athletes and initiatives that promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and health-conscious mode of transport.

This victory not only celebrates the individual brilliance of the team members but also serves as a beacon of hope for a thriving cycling culture in Kenya. It is a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, teamwork, and support from the government and the community.

Kenya now looks forward to leveraging this momentum to elevate its sporting profile and inspire future champions in cycling and beyond.
