The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has launched a new Code of Conduct for Media Practice 2025, aimed at enhancing ethical standards and protecting vulnerable populations in an increasingly digital media landscape.

Published in the Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 70 on May 14, 2025, the revised code was introduced by Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, during the Annual Media Summit held at Nairobi’s Edge Convention Centre.

The revised code follows a High Court ruling that declared the previous Broadcasting Code unconstitutional. The court had directed MCK to develop a new code that establishes age-appropriate standards to safeguard children and other vulnerable groups within six months.

Hon. Kabogo emphasized the importance of integrity in journalism, calling on all media practitioners—including journalists, editors, bloggers, and influencers—to uphold fairness, accuracy, and responsible reporting. “Speed must not override truth,” he said, highlighting the critical role of verification in digital journalism.

He also underscored the nearing completion of Kenya’s national digital policy and ongoing investments in digital literacy and infrastructure to support community media.

The Code of Conduct for Media Practice 2025 introduces provisions to regulate emerging digital trends, including user-generated content, artificial intelligence, online gaming, and betting. It also addresses harmful content such as hate speech, religious incitement, and ethnic conflict.

MCK CEO David Omwoyo welcomed the adoption of the new code, stating that it strengthens ethical safeguards for the media while ensuring accountability in a rapidly evolving digital space. He noted the code prioritizes the protection of children and survivors of sexual violence.

“This Code keeps our media accountable,” said Omwoyo, affirming its role in promoting responsible journalism and national values.

The revised code marks a significant step forward in promoting press freedom while ensuring the media continues to serve the public interest responsibly.
