Kenya and Somalia have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing diplomatic and economic cooperation, with a strong emphasis on trade and security.
President William Ruto held a telephone conversation with his Somali counterpart, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, during which the two leaders discussed key issues affecting the region.
In their discussions, Ruto and Mohamud highlighted the need for continued collaboration in addressing common security challenges, particularly in the fight against terrorism.
Both Kenya and Somalia have been actively engaged in counterterrorism efforts, with Kenya playing a significant role in regional peacekeeping operations, including its contributions to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
The telephone conversation underscored the importance of coordinated strategies to tackle security threats that not only impact the two countries but also pose risks to global stability.
Somalia has long struggled with insecurity due to the presence of the Al-Shabaab militant group, which has been responsible for attacks both within Somalia and across the border in Kenya.
In recent years, Kenya has intensified its counterterrorism efforts while also supporting Somalia’s government in stabilizing the country.
Beyond security matters, the leaders also explored ways to strengthen trade relations between their nations.
Kenya and Somalia share a long history of trade, with Kenya exporting products such as tea, dairy, and manufactured goods to Somalia, while Somalia is a key supplier of livestock to the Kenyan market.
Both governments have been working on policies to streamline cross-border trade, ensuring smoother transactions and economic growth for their citizens.
The renewed diplomatic engagement comes at a time when the East African region is facing various geopolitical and economic challenges.
Strengthening ties between Kenya and Somalia is seen as a crucial step in fostering regional stability and economic resilience.
President Ruto has emphasized Kenya’s commitment to maintaining strong partnerships with neighboring countries as part of his broader foreign policy strategy.
The Kenyan government has been engaging in various diplomatic efforts to improve relations with Somalia, including easing trade restrictions and fostering dialogue on regional security issues.
