Peoples’ Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has dismissed allegations that the country’s current problems are a consequence of a global recession, instead directly attributing blame to President William Ruto‘s leadership.
Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi on Thursday, July 31, 2025, Karua informed the nation that it is neither foreign economic times nor pandemics that have caused the country’s woes but what she referred to as “an epidemic called William Ruto.”.
Our nation is sobbing. Most believe that Kenya is warring with itself, but no—no, it is because of the president,” Karua said.
She decried Ruto’s recent comments in which he reportedly said “enough is enough” to Kenyans and likened the relationship between the public and head of state to that of employee and employer.
“Ruto cannot tell his employers—Kenyans—that enough is enough. If you cannot serve the people who employed you, the only honorable thing to do is pack your bags and leave,” Karua stated.
Karua also blamed the president for disparaging peace in the country by reportedly setting up militias such as those that have been seen in Haiti.
This must come to an end. He cannot establish a Haiti-type militia to break the peace and stability that Kenya has long known,” she said.
The veteran politician called for Ruto to step down, saying Kenyans had suffered enough from his administration. “We are employers, and we are now saying to him—enough is enough,” she added.
Karua further revealed that a combined opposition has laid evidence of government attacks on opposition leaders before the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). The evidence, in her words, consists of reports of assault, police brutality, and attempted assassination.
The opposition has presented unassailable proof to IPOA against these attacks and attempts on the lives of our leaders. IPOA must treat this issue with utmost seriousness. Any action to illegally end a human life—irrespective of race, gender, ethnicity, or rank—must be decried in the strongest terms possible,” Karua said.
She also asked for immediate action against officers implicated in the alleged abuse and warned against further disrespect of the law.
We will no longer condone blatant criminal acts and violations of the rule of law just because they are sanctioned from above,” Karua declared
