Enos Lagat receives a hero's welcome upon his return home to Songoliet Village after being missing for over a week

The atmosphere in Songoliet Village, Kapseret Sub County, was one of jubilation and relief as Enos Lagat, who had been missing for over a week, finally returned home.

His reappearance, a day after over 400 community members demonstrated, pleading with the government for his release, sparked a wave of celebration among the villagers.

Enos, arriving home around 5 PM in a dark tinted V8 Toyota Land Cruiser, was warmly received at his grandmother’s house, a building project he had been undertaking before his disappearance. Women and men alike rejoiced, singing and dancing to Kalenjin songs as they hoisted him on their shoulders, adorning him with the symbolic ‘sinendet’ plant around his neck, signifying his return as a hero.

Felistus Chelule, Enos’s grandmother, could not contain her happiness as tears of joy streamed down her face. “I am overwhelmed with gratitude to see Enos back home safe and sound,” she exclaimed, echoing the sentiments of other women gathered in the homestead, despite the light showers of rain.

Enos, though jubilant, remained composed as he expressed his gratitude to the residents for their prayers and support during his absence. “I assure you all that I have been in a safe place for the last few days, and the police are actively investigating my disappearance,” he reassured.

According to reports, Enos was allegedly abducted on the 30th of last month at Uchumi in Langata Constituency by unknown individuals. Kimutai Kirui of the Centre Against Torture urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to expedite their investigations into Lagat’s disappearance.

On Saturday, residents of Songoliet, led by Enos’s grandmother, held peaceful demonstrations and issued a warning of barricading the Eldoret-Uganda highway if Enos had not been found by Monday. “We will not rest until Enos’s safety is ensured, and justice is served,” she declared, reflecting the determination of the community to seek answers and closure in this ordeal.
