Every Tuesday and Friday, Eldoret’s Kapsoya Estate is a beehive of activity as the Hubz FC-a football team from the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association-takes to the pitch.

Sponsored by Zartex, an Eldoret-based uniform manufacturer, Hubz FC is no ordinary team.

Its members are journalists working in different media houses, as well as attaches, interns, and students of journalism.

It is more than a team; it is a relief from the pressures of their newsroom lives, led by their veteran manager, Augustine Were.

The familiar face among Uasin Gishu’s media fraternity, Were is an accomplished photojournalist, but on the pitch, he is the conductor of a different kind of story-one of camaraderie, wellness, and talent beyond reporting.

“Football helps us relieve fatigue and showcase talents apart from telling stories,” Were shares as he encourages all media professionals to join the vibrant crew.

Thudded kicks of footballs punctuated by laughter and occasional cheers arise, the sun sets over the grassy Kapsoya fields.

The smell of freshly cut grass fills the air, complimented by the earthy smell of the estate around it.

Sharp contrasts brought about by Zartex’s crisp uniforms against the Eldoret late afternoon sky.

It is a pitch that becomes a stage where, for the players of Hubz FC, the stresses of daily deadlines evaporate to make way for the high of teamwork, swift passes, and shared goals of victory either in a friendly match or simply against personal limits.
Augustine is calling on more journalists who have not yet joined the team to wake up and experience this rewarding outlet.

If you are in the journalistic world of Uasin Gishu and you have never had a taste of the magic of Hubz FC, then it’s time to lace your boots.

You might just find out that the field has stories just as rich as those which captivate us in print and broadcast.
