The government has denied any plans to move the National Police College located at Kiganjo. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated there are no plans for relocation of the Kiganjo facility and that the institution continues to play a vital role in police training within Kenya.

As public speculation continues to grow, the Cabinet Secretary wants to make it clear that the college is currently located at its original site. The reports claiming the college would be relocated were circulating as part of a broader plan to reform the security sector. However, Murkomen indicated the reports are misleading and not consistent with government policy. He stated the decision is not to relocate Kiganjo but rather to focus on building new training facilities for police after the recent increase in insecurity along with providing more opportunities for police to train in the regions with more intense levels of insecurity.

The government’s plan for reforming police training involves developing the skill set and ability of police officers. Police officers will be expected to participate in a combination of both a classroom-type program of theory and then participate in a highly structured way in those areas that have faced significant levels of insecurity for more hands-on learning experiences.
