In Garissa Town Constituency, the Garissa Affordable Housing Project (AHP) sits at an increasingly strategic position as one of the flagship projects under the increased national Affordable Housing Programme initiative by the government, which now sits centrally as one of the flagship initiatives under Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

In addition to answering the increased demand for decent and safe affordable housing, the project has proved itself to be a major catalyst for economic activity in Garissa County. Employment opportunities have been created for the local populace as income increases in diverse sectors. Construction workers, building materials suppliers, skilled artisans, transport service providers and mini traders are all beneficiaries of the ongoing works, underlining the project’s social intervention aspect as well as being an economic stimulus.

Garissa Town, one of the fastest-expanding urban centres in northern Kenya, has evidently begun to change physically. The housing project is giving rise to a new and modern skyline that heralds the transition to a more organized and sustainable urban development. This transformation goes through a secured and orderly environment supported by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, whose role in ensuring security and effective public administration remains critical to long-term growth and investor confidence.

The project comprises six residential apartment blocks and a kindergarten, thus testifying to some good planning in community living. Of the six blocks of apartments, two are earmarked for housing at a commercial price, while the other four will be classified into affordable and social housing categories. Such a blended housing scheme is intended to promote an inclusive development path by availing housing for different income strata together with supporting adjacent commercial activities and access to essential social amenities.

Integrating living and social infrastructure provides for the promotion of interaction and cohesion in society and dynamism in the economy. Moreover, it reflects an even broader vision of urban planning that is going beyond shelter to functional neighborhoods meant to perform family life, education, and local enterprise.

Once completed, the Garissa Affordable Housing Project is expected to provide better living conditions to the people, broaden economic opportunities, and improve the status of Garissa as a prominent county center. With good governance, improved security, and well-structured planning, the project is an excellent example of how well-designed housing programs can yield far-reaching development impact in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda objectives.
