Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has issued a strong warning over what he termed as reckless and perilous efforts by the government to slash funding for Kenya’s education sector. He demanded urgent reforms to protect the nation’s development path.

Gachagua addressed the media after meeting with Kenyan professionals in the United States in Baltimore, Maryland. He was accompanied by his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i.

In a statement to the press on Saturday, July 26, 2025, Gachagua stressed the importance of education, referring to it as a pillar of national development that must be safeguarded at all costs.

“Our fellow Kenyans in the diaspora are also worried about the reckless decisions to slash investments in the education sector, as well as the stagnation in the university funding system by the incumbent government,” he noted.

He criticized the leadership of the ministry of education, describing it as incompetent and irresponsible. Gachagua warned that if things went on in the same trajectory, the country’s future would be at risk.

“Education is the backbone of any developing society. Regrettably, in Kenya, mismanagement and poor leadership are pushing this vital sector towards a crisis. If these trends persist, the long-term price tag to generations to come will be disastrous,” he warned.

The DCP leader called upon Kenyans both at home and abroad to actively engage in resisting policies degrading the education system, requesting that they protect the nation’s intellectual pillar.

“We cannot allow anyone to destroy the very foundations upon which our nation is built. If such things are not arrested, what future will our nation and children have?” he queried.

Gachagua also appreciated Kenyan teachers abroad, commending them for their solidarity and for portraying Kenya in a positive manner.

I salute our diaspora teachers for their solidarity and for promoting our national identity with pride through their work overseas,” he stated.

The visit to Baltimore is part of Gachagua’s broader outreach initiative to involve the Kenyan diaspora in discussion on outstanding national concerns and mobilize them towards advocacy for reforms in the country.
