Former United States of America President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an advanced and aggressive form of prostate cancer, according to a statement released by his office on Sunday.
The 82-year-old former president underwent a medical evaluation last week after reporting increased urinary symptoms.
Subsequent tests revealed a prostate nodule, and further analysis confirmed a diagnosis of prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) — indicating a high-grade and fast-growing form of the disease that has metastasized to his bones.
Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Biden’s medical team noted that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, meaning that it can still be treated effectively.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” the statement read.
Biden is currently at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware, where he is resting and reviewing treatment options with his family and medical team.
Health experts have urged the public to remain calm, stressing that prostate cancer is a common condition among older men.
“Prostate cancer is very common. Most older men have some small amount of cancer cells in the prostate,” said Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a Florida-based urologist.
Further updates on Biden’s condition and treatment plan are expected in the coming days.
