Francis Gichiri Ndua, the former Managing Director of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), is no more, leaving behind a legacy that is entwined in Kenya’s sea history.

Incumbent KPA Managing Director, Captain William Ruto, led the condolences to the late Ndua, describing him as a giant whose visionary leadership revolutionized Kenya’s ports activities and enhanced the country’s status in overseas maritime trade.

It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of a legendary personality in Kenya’s shipping sector, our former Managing Director, Francis Gichiri Ndua,” Captain Ruto stated. “On behalf of the KPA Board and the Authority at large, I extend our sincere condolences to his loved ones and to everyone who had the opportunity to work with him.”.

Ruto attributed Ndua as a highly regarded maritime economist whose vision and commitment to excellence led the modernization of the Authority. During his tenure at the helm, KPA recorded a record feat in 2014 by handling one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container cargo for the first time—an accomplishment that marked a sea change in Kenya’s port business.

“That record reflected his focus on efficiency, innovation, and modernization,” Ruto stated.

On the international front, Ndua distinguished himself as the first African to be elected President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH)—a global honor attained five decades after the organization’s founding. His appointment not only elevated Kenya’s profile within international maritime circles but also highlighted Africa’s growing influence in global port and transport economics.

Apart from his work accomplishments, Ndua was also celebrated for his integrity, mentorship, and wisdom. Even though he had retired from KPA, he remained a strong voice in maritime consultancy and research, informing policies and studies that facilitated the globalization and competitiveness of Kenya in the maritime sector.

His legacy may not be measured in terms of titles or numbers,” Ruto said. “It’s present in the institutions he helped create, the standard of excellence he maintained, and the many professionals he mentored throughout his career.”

As they buried him, Ruto shared how the maritime community too honors a life committed to progress, innovation, and service to the public.

As we remember him, we pledge to live up to his vision of a modern, efficient, and world-famous port system,” he added further.

Captain Ruto concluded with sympathies to the family of Ndua, saying that his spirit would continue to motivate generations of maritime professionals.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
