The trial of a woman charged in connection with the alleged killing of
her boyfriend, a Pwani University student, heard that the deceased had
contracted Covid-19 prior to his death.
Sergeant Sophia Ibrahim, attached to the directorate of criminal
investigations department told Justice Robert Wananda of Eldoret High Court
that the purpose of subjecting the body to Covid-19 test was meant to
ascertain the cause of his death.
“When the samples from the deceased body was subjected to Covid-19
test it returned positive ,” said Sergeant Ibrahim who was
testifying in a case where Jane Wairimu 26 is charged with
the murder of her partner David Wairire 23 in Kipkenyo area of
Kapseret Sub County, in Uasin Gishu County.
The accused who appeared relaxed in the dock is said to have committed
the alleged criminal offence on October 25, 2020.
The police detective further told the packed court that when they
arrived at the scene of crime, they found a crowd who informed them
that they were holding the accused person after linking her to the
death of the deceased.
“The crowd surrendered the suspect to us before we secured the scene
of crime and entered into the one bedroom house where the two partners
were sharing and discovered the lifeless body which we transported to
MTRH in Eldoret,” she said.
Ibrahim told the Judge that when they interrogated the suspect at the
police station over the death of her boyfriend, she told them he had
been injured in a robbery attack the previous night.
According to the suspect, her boyfriend lost consciousness after the
alleged Saturday night attack at a nearby Kipkaren Trading Centre.
“She told us that she was also injured in the robbery attack but she
did not take any initiative to report the matter with the police until
she was arrested in connection with his death,” said Ibrahim.
The suspect is said to have stayed with the lifeless body of the
deceased for two days until neighbors discovered the university
student had died.
Sergeant Ibrahim told the court that the explanation given by the
suspect regarding the circumstances of her boyfriend’s death and why
she did not report the attack on the fateful night is what raised
suspicion.
The court heard that a postmortem report from MTRH showed that the
slain university student died from bruises on the head.
“When we discovered the body in the house, we found the hands tied, a
stab wound in the stomach and some bruises in the head,” added
Ibrahim.
They also established that the house in which the deceased was sharing
with his girlfriend was part of rental houses he inherited from his
late father, and he has been collecting rent from tenants for his
upkeep.
The hearing of the case will continue on July 12.
