“Your honor, I bought this minor at KSh 30,500 after staying for over six years without bearing any child where I was married”

An Eldoret court was left in shock after a woman accused of stealing a six-year-old boy claimed she bought the child for KSh 30,500 from a willing seller.

Moincah Kwamboka, appearing before Principal Magistrate Kesse Cheronoh, pleaded with the court to release her so that she could produce the woman who allegedly sold her the boy.

“Your honor, I bought this minor at KSh 30,500 after staying for over six years without bearing any child where I was married. My husband chased me away for not giving birth, forcing me to go back to my parent’s home,” she told the court.

Kwamboka admitted that the boy was not her biological son, explaining that she had been introduced to the seller by her aunt after years of struggling with infertility.

She added that her aunt arranged a meeting between her and the alleged seller from Langas Estate in Eldoret.

“Your honor, my aunty told me it was shameful for me to stay childless and that she had identified a woman who was willing to sell me a baby for KSh 30,500 in Uasin Gishu County,” she said.

According to court documents, the boy was reported missing on May 16, 2024, from the Langas informal settlement in Uasin Gishu County. Detectives from the DCI Langas Police Station later rescued the child on October 6, 2025, in a remote village in Nyamira County, following a public tip-off. The woman was subsequently arrested and detained.

During the hearing, the child’s biological mother, Abscondita Azenga, broke down in tears as she recounted her year-long search for her missing son.

“The woman claiming to be the mother of my son had fraudulently obtained a birth certificate for him from the Nyamira registration office and even enrolled him in Grade One,” Mrs. Azenga told the court.

Azenga, a mother of three, narrated that she received a call from Langas Police Station on Monday, asking her to come for identification.

“When I arrived, officers showed me a photograph of a boy and asked if I could recognize him. I immediately confirmed he was my missing child,” she said.

The prosecution has since requested the court to order a DNA test between the accused and the biological mother to determine the boy’s parentage. The test is expected to be conducted at the Government Chemist in Kisumu County before Monday.

Kwamboka did not oppose the DNA test, insisting she was willing to cooperate and even help police apprehend the alleged mastermind behind the child trafficking scheme.

Principal Magistrate Kesse Cheronoh directed that the minor be placed at a private rescue centre in Pioneer Estate, Eldoret, pending the outcome of the DNA results.

“The minor should be escorted to a private-run rescue centre within Pioneer Estate. The biological mother shall have unlimited access to the child until the outcome of the DNA results, after which she will be allowed to take him home,” ruled Cheronoh.

The court further ordered that Kwamboka remain in custody at Langas Police Station until October 29, when the case will be mentioned.
