Eldoret, the bustling heart of Uasin Gishu County, is rapidly ascending as Kenya’s next major economic and industrial hub. This transformation was spotlighted at the Eldoret International Business Summit 2025, a three-day event that convened government officials, investors, and business leaders to chart the region’s future in trade, investment, and manufacturing.

Strategic Infrastructure and Investment Initiatives

Governor Jonathan Bii, the summit’s chief guest, emphasized Eldoret’s strategic position and infrastructural advancements as catalysts for its economic rise. “Eldoret is not just a hub for business; it is becoming a destination of choice,” he stated. The governor highlighted the ongoing expansion of Eldoret International Airport, including a 500-meter runway extension to accommodate larger cargo planes, enhancing the region’s export capabilities .

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen echoed this sentiment, noting that the airport’s upgrade would facilitate direct exports to international markets, reducing reliance on Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport .

Export Processing Zone: A Catalyst for Industrial Growth

A significant milestone in Eldoret’s economic journey is the establishment of a 135-acre Export Processing Zone (EPZ), officially declared in Legal Notice 31 of 2024 . The EPZ aims to attract investments in agro-processing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT-enabled services. EPZA Chairman Richard Cheruyot emphasized the EPZ’s role in positioning Eldoret as a manufacturing and export hub, stating, “This is part of our broader agenda to support local industries and make Kenya a global manufacturing hub.”

The EPZ is projected to create over 3,000 direct jobs and numerous indirect opportunities in sectors such as farming, logistics, and trade .

Agricultural Excellence and Market Expansion

Eldoret’s fertile lands produce a variety of cash crops, including coffee, tea, avocados, and macadamia nuts. Governor Bii highlighted the county’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and export potential. “Our farmers are the backbone of this county. Through better logistics, we will ensure these products can reach international markets faster,” he remarked.

The county’s collaboration with the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) aims to support farmers in meeting international standards, facilitating direct exports from Eldoret International Airport .

Modern Market Infrastructure to Boost Trade

In a bid to support local traders and farmers, the county is constructing the Eldoret 64 Ultra-Modern Market in the central business district. This facility will feature over 3,000 business spaces, underground parking, healthcare services, and other amenities. KNCCI Uasin Gishu Chapter Chairperson Willy Kennei noted, “The new market will be of great help to business people and provide an available market for farmers’ produce” .

A Vision for Sustainable Economic Growth

The Eldoret International Business Summit 2025 underscored the region’s commitment to sustainable economic development through strategic infrastructure projects, industrial diversification, and agricultural excellence. As Eldoret continues to attract investments and enhance its export capabilities, it stands poised to become a pivotal player in Kenya’s economic landscape.
