Eldoret: 36 Suspects Arraigned Over Saba Saba Protests, 77 Arrested in Total

A total of 36 suspects were on Tuesday arraigned at the Eldoret Law Courts, facing charges of going armed in public, contrary to Section 88 of the Penal Code. The individuals were arrested on Monday in the areas of Huruma, Roadblock, and Maili Nne during the Saba Saba demonstrations.
The accused appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Mukabi Kimani, who released them on a bond of KSh 50,000 with one surety of a similar amount, or alternatively a cash bail of KSh 10,000.
Confirming the developments, Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi stated that a total of 77 suspects were arrested in connection to the protests, with an additional 41 individuals expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, July 9.
“We were able to contain the situation and disperse groups of marauding youth. There were no reports of vandalism or destruction of property, although the running battles continued late into the night,” said Mwanthi.

Authorities maintain that security operations will continue to ensure law and order across Eldoret and its environs amid rising tensions linked to anti-government protests.
