The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a comprehensive investigation into a violent incident that disrupted an anti-corruption operation led by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in Trans Nzoia County.

The EACC officers were executing a legally sanctioned search at the residence and office of Governor George Natembeya, as well as four other individuals.

The operation was part of a probe into alleged irregular procurement and fictitious payments totaling KSh 1.4 billion by the county government across the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 financial years.

According to an official EACC statement, the officers were acting under search warrants issued by a competent court. The search at Governor Natembeya’s residence was conducted in the presence of his family, legal representatives, and the county attorney.

However, the operation descended into chaos when a hostile group of unidentified individuals stormed the premises, overpowering the security officers accompanying the EACC team. The attackers vandalized five EACC vehicles and made away with seized documents and other valuables.

DCI has condemned the incident as a grave obstruction of justice and an affront to the rule of law. “This is not merely interference with an investigation—it is a criminal act aimed at derailing accountability processes.

We are committed to identifying and arresting all individuals involved,” a senior DCI official said.

The attack comes amid heightened scrutiny of county governments’ financial management. According to the Auditor-General’s 2023 report, several devolved units, including Trans Nzoia, have faced audit queries regarding procurement irregularities and unaccounted expenditures.

Both the EACC and DCI have pledged to continue their investigations without fear or favor. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting, but the authorities confirmed that CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and forensic evidence are being analyzed to track down the perpetrators.

This incident is expected to intensify the national conversation around the protection of investigative institutions and the need for stronger enforcement of anti-corruption laws.
