Kenyan comedian KK Mwenyewe, renowned for his viral impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has passed away following a brief illness. He was pronounced dead on Monday night at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital, according to fellow comedian and close collaborator, Kafengo.
In a moving tribute, Kafengo shared, “Rest in peace, brother. You will forever remain in our hearts. To the family and friends, may God grant us strength during this difficult time.”
Born Zachariah Kariuki, KK Mwenyewe rose to national fame in 2022 through social media, captivating audiences with his witty political satire and uncanny imitation of Gachagua’s speech and mannerisms. His rise coincided with the early days of the Kenya Kwanza administration, earning him a loyal following for his timely and sharp comedic sketches.
Despite widespread public anticipation that Gachagua might acknowledge and support the young comedian’s talent, Kariuki revealed in a past interview with Jeff Kuria that no such support ever materialized.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of grief across the country. Among those mourning him is Senator Okiah Omtatah, who described KK Mwenyewe as a gifted voice of his generation.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a young and talented comedian whose voice resonated with the spirit of a generation,” Omtatah said in a statement.
