Peaceful protests led by Kenyan youth turned into a day of chaos in Eldoret’s Central Business District on Wednesday, with clashes erupting between demonstrators and baton-wielding individuals amid heavy police presence, June 25.

The demonstration was part of a nationwide movement to mark the one-year anniversary of the June 2024 protests, during which several young people were killed while attempting to occupy Parliament. Protesters had gathered in Eldoret to honor the fallen and demand government accountability.

Tension escalated when a group of men armed with wooden clubs—known locally as “rungu” or “mpini”—were seen patrolling alongside police officers. Officers claimed the armed individuals were protecting businesses, but witnesses reported that some of them assaulted civilians perceived to be agitators.

“To some of the business owners, it was a fruitless day,” said Edmond Khaemba, a local journalist. “But for others, it became an unexpected boost.”

An ice cream vendor in the city center described the day as “good for business,” crediting the warm weather and the closure of local hotels. “The armed guys were near my stall, but they didn’t bother me. It depends on how you talk to them,” the vendor said.

While some businesses remained open under caution, others shut down completely amid fears of looting and violence. No official figures were released on injuries or arrests by press time.
