Citizen TV journalist Emily Chebet has been selected for the prestigious John S. Knight (JSK) Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University.

Chebet, who specializes in health, science, and environmental reporting, will join the 2027 fellowship class alongside 12 other journalists and media professionals from different parts of the world for a nine-month academic programme in the United States.

The fellowship brings together journalists, newsroom leaders, freelancers, and professionals from organizations supporting press freedom and media development to explore innovative solutions shaping the future of journalism.

According to JSK Director Dawn Garcia, the programme seeks to strengthen journalism amid growing threats to press freedom and sustainability in the media industry.

“To strengthen journalism’s independence, bolster its essential role in building informed, democratic communities, and to keep journalists safe, we need multidisciplinary approaches,” Garcia said.

The fellowship will offer participants individual coaching, tailored workshops, and access to Stanford’s academic and professional resources aimed at building innovation and resilience in journalism.

Chebet described the opportunity as a major milestone not only for her career but also for journalism in Kenya and across Africa.

“This fellowship is a unique opportunity to engage with some of the world’s leading thinkers and innovators, exchange ideas, and explore solutions for the future of journalism,” said Chebet.

She added that she hopes to use the experience gained at Stanford to help drive innovation and meaningful change in African journalism.
