Teenager Cherono Kipkorir put up an excellent game to emerge the Overall Gross Lady Winner during the Royal Nairobi Golf Club tournament of the 2025 NCBA Golf Series.
Cherono, who caused headlines in 2021 with her victory in the same leg when she was just 11 years old, once again showed her class by returning a 79 strokes off handicap 7. Her brilliant performance earned her a place in the Grand Finale on November 28, 2025, at Muthaiga Golf Club.
One of the winners’ bracket members of the triumvirate was Royal Nairobi Golf Club Champion Kevin Juma, who vindicated the hype by being declared Overall Men’s Winner. He scored off handicap 2, with a total gross score of 71 to also qualify for the final. The tournament this year had a strong return of 263 golfers.
In the divisions, Brian Gachuba (handicap 6) claimed the Division One championship with 39 points. Division Two had victories for John Juma (handicap 19) and Flora Mutahi (handicap 24), who both recorded 44 points to win in the men’s and ladies’ divisions respectively. Tribhovan Chavda won the Division Three championship after recording 43 points.
Junior category also featured another exciting talent, with Cherise Wachira (handicap 11) returning 37 points to take the junior crown. Wachira will also represent Cherono, Kevin Juma, John Juma, Mutahi, and Chavda in playing for Royal during the grand finale. Wachira also took the longest drive among the ladies, and Collins Too did the same among the men. Hesbon Odumbe and Mary Cox also came closest to the pin in their divisions.
Prizes for staff and guests went to Alex Kiome and Joseph Mokaya, who obtained 38 and 36 points respectively.
Speaking after the tournament, NCBA Kenya Managing Director James Gachora congratulated the winners and the participants and reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting the sport. “Congratulations to today’s winners. At NCBA, we shall continue to give golfers the opportunity to excel on the course as well as in life,” he further stated.
The tour then proceeds to Nanyuki Golf Club on September 20, where other golfers will battle for qualification spots as the tournament edges closer to its conclusion.
Elvis Muigua carried his excellent form in the Coast region further by defeating defending champion Michael Karanga in the Vasco da Gama Cup at Malindi Golf Club.
Muigua, who was just crowned the Diani Beach Masters winner, was tied on 9-over-par 219 with Karanga and Ebill Omollo, before winning it in a thriller three-hole playoff. His rounds of 74, 70, and 75 proved to be enough to claim the title. Omollo finished strong with a final-round 69 after first rounds of 73 and 77, while Karanga posted 71, 70, and 78.
The victory pushed Muigua ranking points to 1,316, in third position just below John Lejirma (2,050) and Karanga (1,740).
