Boxing Federation of Kenya Secretary General David Munuhe has hailed the high level of competition witnessed during this season of the 2025 National Boxing League, an indication that Kenyan boxing is steadily gaining in quality and depth. Speaking after the curtain came down on this season in Kisumu, Munuhe said the enthusiasm and skill shown by boxers from across the country reflect a sport on a firm upward trajectory.

In the season finale, record champions Kenya Police, affectionately known as Chafua Chafua, sealed a back-to-back league title to reaffirm their dominance. Coming into the competition as favourites, the Police team maintained their commanding form from the very first leg of the tournament to seal the championship in emphatic style. Munuhe praised the consistency, adding that the whole league was well run and very competitive, just what the federation has been working hard to achieve.

“The league has been excellent right from start to finish, with no major setbacks. As a federation we are pleased with the turnout, the organization, and the standard of boxing presented,” Munuhe said. He encouraged teams to retain the same commitment moving into next year’s campaign and expressed hope that even more counties would register for the 2026 edition to widen the sport’s reach.

Kenya Police were sure to confirm their supremacy, as they won the Kisumu leg with 30 points, six ahead of nearest rivals KDF, who finished with 24 points. This performance ensured Chafua Chafua ended the season with an impressive 110 points, placing the title completely out of reach for other contenders. For KDF, their ambition of winning the title suffered an early blow when they failed to participate in the opening leg in Busia, a costly setback that proved hard to recover from for the rest of the season.

Individual brilliance was also rewarded, with Boniface Mogunde, the captain of the national team and current Africa Boxing Championships’ champion in the light-middleweight category, taking home the 2025 Best Male Boxer award. On the ladies’ front, the award of Best Female Boxer went to Amina Martha, further emphasizing the increasing potential that Kenyan boxing has come to possess.

In the competitive bouts, KDF’s Dennis Muthama claimed the national bantamweight (54kg) title after overcoming a strong challenge from Kenya Police’s Shaffi Bakari, who was forced out of the semifinals on medical grounds.

The overall standings were a reflection of the widespread participation witnessed in the sport, with Nairobi County taking third on 37 points, followed by former champions Kenya Prisons with 28 points. Nakuru County took fifth place with 25 points. Nakuru Amateur Boxing Club completed the top ten with 24, followed by Kibra on 21, Kisumu 20, Laikipia 12 and Githurai 44 on 9.

Other teams featuring during the season included Mombasa with 7, followed by Busia with 4, Kongowea with 4, Kiambu with 3, while Vihiga collected 2. Teams that collected a single point each include Mbaraki, Havana, Molo, Kwale, and Siaya. Trans Nzoia and Kajiado wrapped up the campaign without any points. Munuhe reiterated that the federation is committed to widening the sport, improving standards, and ensuring the league continues to inspire the next generation of Kenyan boxing talent.
