Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has tried to end the rumor in his political career. He unequivocally rejected claims that he quit the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

His remark came amid heightened controversy over his loyalty, which had been generated by his absence from several recent ODM functions and his bitter criticism of the all-inclusive government. There had been rumors about whether he was losing loyalty to the party that saw him enter Parliament.

In a Thursday, August 28, 2025, interview, Owino explained. He insisted that he is still fully committed to ODM and wedded to its leadership. But he also admitted that he does not always agree with all the decisions made by party leaders.

I have not defected from ODM. I am not fighting my party or its leaders,” he said. “What I am doing is making the government accountable. Even our party leader, Raila Odinga, also believes in accountability.”.

The young parliamentarian explained that his recent outburst should not be interpreted as defiance. He told Members of Parliament have a responsibility not just to serve the people but to also restrain the government. He explained that his role of oversight requires him to raise his voice when people are not being provided what they were promised.

We need the government to fulfill its promises it made when they campaigned,” he said. “Where corruption is endemic or where there is a breakdown in service delivery, silence is betrayal. Kenyans are suffering, and leaders must open their mouths.”.

Owino also added that the majority of ODM young leaders feel frustrated in the same manner. They feel frustrated that issues of a national nature such as unemployment, the high cost of living, and corruption are not being addressed. However, he insisted that these frustrations do not amount to disloyalty.

He praised Raila Odinga for his steadfastness in seeking justice, equity, and the rights of the ordinary Kenyans. It was along his line that demanding accountability fell into the virtues Odinga has perpetually held dear to his heart.

The MP also debunked talk of a near political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election. He said he is as much in ODM as he remains vocal about government actions. At the same time, he formalized that he will be vying for the Nairobi governor’s position in 2027, announcing his next political target.
