Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has called for accountability following violent incidents during Tuesday’s protests, labeling the shootings a “massacre.”
In a statement issued Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 3:47 PM EAT, Owino condemned the police brutality after visiting victims at Kenyatta National Hospital. “This is not the Kenya we want.
No Kenyan should be hunted down for expressing their views or standing up for their future,” he said, vowing to persist in the fight for justice.
Owino reported that 16 young individuals were admitted with injuries from the demonstrations. Of these, nine have been discharged, while seven remain hospitalized.
Among the latter, two are in critical condition, including a young man seen in viral footage being shot at close range. The MP detailed the severe injuries, citing evidence of deliberate attacks: one patient with seven gunshot wounds to the back, two shot in the eye, one with a leg wound, another with a neck injury, and one struck in the lower back.
The MP’s visit underscores growing public outrage over the use of force during the protests, which erupted over economic and governance issues.
Owino emphasized that the community would not be intimidated, pledging continued support for the victims. “We will not stop demanding justice. And we will not stop standing with the people of Kenya until those responsible are held to account,” he affirmed.
The incident has intensified calls for an independent investigation into police conduct. With tensions simmering, Kenyans await further action from authorities as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the violence.
