Athletic President Barnabas Korir has called on athletes to maintain high moral standards throughout their careers.
Speaking at Lobo Village in Eldoret, Korir expressed concern over the rising cases of irresponsible behavior among top athletes, which he said has led to tragic consequences, including loss of lives due to domestic violence.
Korir condemned unethical practices such as age manipulation, stating that such vices tarnish the integrity of the sport.
He emphasized that the sports fraternity does not tolerate such actions and urged athletes to uphold honesty and discipline in their careers.
During the event, Korir also encouraged residents to attend the upcoming race, scheduled for February 22, at Lobo Village in Kapseret.
He highlighted the theme of this year’s event, Run for a Legacy, noting that the race is not only a competitive sport but also serves as a therapeutic activity that helps participants relax and clear their minds.
The event was graced by several prominent athletes, both active and retired, including Beatrice Chebet, Ibrahim Chelanga, and retired athlete Paul Terigut.
Their presence underscored the significance of the race in promoting athletics and fostering a sense of community among sports enthusiasts.
The Absa Sirikwa Classic has long been a major attraction, drawing thousands of spectators who either attend in person or follow the race via various broadcast channels.
The course is known for its challenging terrain, featuring uphill and downhill stretches as well as muddy puddles, providing a tough yet thrilling experience for competitors.
As anticipation builds for the race, Korir’s message serves as a crucial reminder to athletes to uphold integrity and discipline, ensuring that their careers remain exemplary both on and off the track.
