Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o recently hosted a Ugandan parliamentary delegation from the Committee on Climate Change, led by Chairperson Hon. Songa Lawrence Biyika and Deputy Chairperson Hon. Atuto Jacinta, in a high-level meeting focused on addressing the climate change challenges facing the East African region.
The discussions centered on fostering collaboration between Uganda and Kenya, as well as other members of the East African Community (EAC), to combat the growing environmental crisis.
Governor Nyong’o highlighted the need for stronger partnerships and more coordinated efforts within the EAC, recognizing that climate change is a transboundary issue that demands a united approach.
“Our discussions focused on strengthening partnerships and collaborative strategies to tackle climate change within the East African Community,” said Governor Nyong’o.
He emphasized the urgency of establishing robust frameworks to deal with the environmental challenges that transcend national borders, especially in shared ecosystems like the Lake Victoria Basin.
“The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) plays a key role in managing shared environmental concerns across our borders,” Nyong’o noted.
The LVBC is responsible for overseeing the sustainable management of the Lake Victoria ecosystem, which is vital to the livelihoods of millions of people in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
“We remain committed to advancing sustainable, regional climate solutions,” he added.
The Lake Victoria Basin, one of the most critical natural resources in East Africa, has been under increasing pressure from climate change, pollution, and overexploitation.
Addressing these challenges is crucial for the future prosperity of the region. The meeting underscored the importance of joint initiatives to protect this vital resource and to enhance climate resilience across the region.
Joining Governor Nyong’o during the meeting were several Kisumu County officials, including the Acting County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment, Natural Resources & Climate Change, Judith Oluoch, and Mr. Ogallo Erick, Chief Officer for Water, Environment, Natural Resources & Climate Change.
Their presence reflected the county’s commitment to working with both national and regional stakeholders in promoting sustainable environmental practices.
The Ugandan delegation expressed their gratitude for the productive discussions and emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between the two nations.
Both parties agreed to explore more opportunities for collaboration in addressing the climate crisis, particularly through joint policies and initiatives that can enhance the resilience of communities across East Africa.
This meeting marks a significant step towards more effective regional cooperation in the fight against climate change, with the hope of securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
