The government of Kenya and the county governments have been challenged to consider increasing monetary allocations towards child protection institutions and approaches, as a way of averting, increasing cases of child abuse in the country
Child Rights protection organizations from across Kisumu County have cited, minimal funding and lack of adequate resources as a major contributor to either slow or lack of response to emerging threats to children in the wider society
Dr, Orimbo Bernard, a director at the East African Child Rights Network, says that lack of resources , makes it difficult for even respective government officers to respond to emerging cases in their respective jurisdiction
The partners in the meeting mentioned that, a number of children both boys and girls continue facing cases of abuses ranging from child labour, sexual abuse, hence their rallying call for more efforts to be done
The director of the EACRN says, that it is saddening to see a huge number of children dropping out of school due to basics, that can easily be provided by the government
“At this age and time our girls are still missing school due to menstrual hygiene issues, juts lacking sanitary pads , this is something that can be addressed once and for all if the government is really willing to do so”
He says that days wasted affects their performance in academics, and sadly it also exposed the young girls to predators who pretend to offer the needs and eventually, end up molesting them sexually
Dr Orimbo, has insisted that a clear well coordinated approach should come from both the county government and the national government agencies and offices to help end this challenges
“this needs an all rounded approach, where all this people, from the Mps, women reps The Mca’s, and other partners can pull together, instead of everyone doing his or her own things at times with no impact”
Speaking in Alwala village , in Seme Sub county during a meeting that brought together various child protection stakeholders the director as also raised alarm over increasing cases of child marriages within the area and neighboring villages, occasioned by cases of early pregnancies
Any moment a young girl in school gets pregnant the community is always keen to organize quick marriages, this should not be the case since the school girls can deliver and be given a chance to further their education.
