A former Nandi County governor is at the centre of a political storm, with political pundits alleging that his recent actions are undermining unity within the Kenya Kwanza administration and the broader Kalenjin political leadership.

The controversy stems from the alleged filing of a petition challenging the role of the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, a move that analysts claim indirectly questions President William Ruto’s constitutional authority to appoint senior government officials.

Political observers argue that the development reflects an emerging internal power struggle at a time when the President is focused on implementing his administration’s development agenda. They contend that prolonged public disputes over political influence and perceived proximity to the Head of State risk diverting attention from governance and service delivery.

According to the analysts, disagreements that had previously played out during village meetings, funeral gatherings and vernacular radio programmes have now allegedly escalated to the courts after failing to gain wider political traction. They warn that pursuing internal political contests through litigation could deepen divisions within the ruling coalition.

The developments come as political succession campaigns begin to gather momentum in Nandi County ahead of the 2027 General Election. A political contest is already brewing over who will succeed the current governor once his constitutionally permitted two terms come to an end. Several politicians are reportedly positioning themselves for the county’s top seat, setting the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

The incumbent governor, Stephen Sang, has already publicly hinted at seeking a parliamentary seat after completing his second and final term as governor in 2027, a move that has further reshaped political calculations within the county.

Analysts say the emerging succession politics could be fuelling internal rivalries, with some leaders seeking to consolidate their political influence ahead of the next electoral cycle. They caution that premature succession debates, regional kingpin contests and personality clashes risk weakening the region’s political cohesion at a time when leaders should be focused on development.

The pundits argue that the current political environment calls for leaders to rally behind President William Ruto’s administration, respect the President’s constitutional mandate in making appointments, and focus on supporting programmes aimed at accelerating development and improving the livelihoods of Kenyans.

They also point to historical political experiences, arguing that internal divisions have often inflicted greater damage on political movements than opposition from external rivals. Consequently, they urge leaders to embrace dialogue, unity and issue-based politics instead of engaging in contests that could erode public confidence and distract from the government’s development agenda.

The allegations surrounding the former governor’s involvement in the petition remain political claims and have not been independently verified.
