Prominent lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has warmed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to leave the office before an impending impeachment process starts in the Senate.

In his statement on 15 October 2024, the outspoken lawyer reasoned that the Deputy President faces a small window of opportunity if he is to salvage his political career.

Vocal Abdullahi, known for his sharp opinions in matters of governance, maintained that controversial Gachagua may have already sealed his political fate should he delay his resignation until after the impeachment motion starts rolling.

“If he wants to have a new lease on life in politics, he must resign before the impeachment motion begins in the Senate,” he said.

Abdullahi said such an impeachment process could become an unstoppable tide once it gets underway.

“If he attempts to resign at the middle of such an impeachment process as it progresses, and evidence is adduced and prosecuted by representatives of the National Assembly, the Senate will not then stop the proceedings,” he said.

The lawyer explained that the moment the National Assembly tables its evidence against Gachagua, the Senate will have to go on with the process at whatever stage it was, and no resignation would help at that stage.

Abdullahi seemed to say that Gachagua could not escape the consequences of the charges once the wheels of the impeachment process were set in motion.

Abdullai further reiterated that the Senate would deliver a verdict, notwithstanding the late resignation by the Deputy President.

“It will continue and render judgment notwithstanding his belated resignation,” he said, emphasizing that resigning after the process had commenced would little stop its momentum.

His lawyer called on Gachagua to move swiftly and resign, saying, “In my view, he must go by lunchtime tomorrow at the latest.”

This timeline insinuates the gravity of the situation, insofar as the impeachment process appears to be at the door.

With the speculations building on impeachment, the political future of Gachagua therefore hangs in the balance.

This resignation, were he to take Abdullahi’s advice, could give him time to regroup for a potential future comeback into political life.

But, in case of undue delay, the consequence might be an acrimonious and drawn-out impeachment process that would further damage what little standing he has with the outside political world.

The situation is now unraveling fast, with all eyes now on Gachagua to do the right thing and take the lawyer’s advice or face the full consequences of the impeachment process.
