A popular Facebook blogger has caused a stir among his followers after posting a message from one of his 700k followers who questioned why Olympic champion and former world record marathon holder Eliud Kipchoge is yet to congratulate his compatriot Kelvin Kiptum who smashed the former’s record in Chicago USA on Sunday.

Alfred Koech-Sergent a native of Nandi County  based in Australia posted a message from a follower he identified as Kigen, questioning Kipchoge’s silence and there was no shortage of response from Kenyans.

“Hello Alfred,Eliud Kipchoge should have congratulated Kelvin Kiptum from breaking his world record. 24 hrs. after no mention on his page with 1M followers. I have been a huge fan of Eliud since 2004. It’s unsportsmanlike to ignore Kelvin’s performance from EMC,’ Kigen. The message read.

Koech’s followers flooded the comment section with mixed reactions with some agreeing with Kigen’s sentiments while others defended Kipchoge’s silence. We have sampled a few for our readers.

Harry Kipruto commented, That’s kidish of the author.

Meshack Chichi said, Don’t judge easily..You never know what he has for him in store.

Nathan Melly: There is no problem at all; Ronaldo did not congratulate Messi for winning world cup.

Lilian Jepkemboi says, I have never seen Kiptum congratulating Eliud..can people mind their own business.

But there others who agreed with Kigen’s view that the Olympic champion should have congratulated Kiptum who bagged a new world record in a time of 2:00:35 to eclipse Kipchoge’s previous record of 2:01.09.

Kipkoech says, We call it ng’etkonda and summarize that he wasn’t happy for the record.

Bright Mswati commented, He is full of himself (kipchoge)

Kiplaget Calvinz asked, Has he (kipchoge) ever congratulated everyone ?

Jane Macharia said, I have been checking his Facebook page since morning.

Simon Lennox Yego was precise, Kipchoge hajaamini.

Edu Fundi had this to say, Not congratulating somebody who just broke your record is obviously jealousy.

It’s fair to mention that there exists stiff rivalry among counties in the North Rift region especially Nandi(kipchoge’s home county), Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet(Kiptum’s home county) on who own the bragging rights in athletics and obviously this is one of the banter moments.
