Uasin Gishu County Woman MP Gladys Boss Shollei has hit out at the police officers and chiefs whom he accuses of accepting bribes from illicit brewers despite knowing the dangers of illicit alcohol on human health.
Speaking in Eldoret during the Mashujaa Day celebrations, Shollei cited that the illicit alcohols have corrupted the morals of many youths in the county and chiefs together with the police officers still allow the illicit brewers to continue.
“Illicit alcohols have made our children lose focus in life and I want to confirm that the chiefs and police officers do collude with the illicit brewers,” noted the National Assembly Deputy Speaker.
Further, she gave a stern warning to the officers stating that citizens have the power to arrest police who fail to adhere to the laws.
She attributed this to the era of the late president Mwai Kibaki where residents used to arrest police officers who were law-breakers.
“Chiefs know exactly the places police officers go there and they are given some token then they leave the place without taking action. If police officers cannot do the work then we citizens can deliver and if we find police officers taking bribes we will arrest them. During the time of the late Mwai Kibaki citizens used to arrest unjust police officers and we will re-introduce this,” she said.
At the same time, the County Woman MP stated that the government will pay the cost for anybody going for rehabilitation.
“We have a program if somebody wants to go for rehabilitation we normally pay for them NHIF to cover that cost.
Early this month Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii ordered a crackdown on illicit alcohol targeting to tame the trade that had risen in the recent years within the county.
