President William Ruto has inspected the construction of the Kapsait-Kapsangar-Tapach-Sondany road in Pokot South Constituency, West Pokot County, as the government advances its infrastructure development programme in the region.
The road project, valued at KSh2.3 billion, is expected to improve transport links and open up the area to economic opportunities by making it easier for residents and businesses to access markets and essential services.
According to the President, the road forms part of a wider KSh21 billion investment targeting the construction of 200 kilometres of roads across West Pokot County.
The investment is intended to improve connectivity within the county and strengthen links between rural communities and commercial centres.
Improved road access is expected to support the movement of agricultural produce, reduce transport difficulties and ease access to public services in areas where poor roads have constrained economic activity.
1,960 Households to Get Electricity
During his visit to Pokot South, Ruto also flagged off the KSh336 million Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project, which is expected to connect 1,960 households to electricity.
The project is part of a wider government initiative to extend electricity access to homes and businesses across West Pokot County.
Ruto said the government was investing KSh2.3 billion to connect 10,000 households to electricity throughout the county.
The expansion of electricity access is expected to benefit households that have relied on alternative energy sources while creating opportunities for small businesses to adopt electric equipment and extend their operations.
Access to reliable power can also support education, improve household lighting and create better conditions for enterprises operating in rural communities.
Government Targets Improved Rural Connectivity
The road construction and electricity projects form part of the government’s wider infrastructure programme aimed at improving living conditions and supporting economic activity in underserved areas.
In West Pokot, better roads could help farmers and traders transport goods more efficiently, while expanded electricity connections could support businesses, homes and public institutions.
The KSh21 billion road programme is expected to cover 200 kilometres across the county, although the completion timelines for the individual projects were not provided in the President’s statement.
The government is also targeting 10,000 household electricity connections through the KSh2.3 billion countywide programme.
The progress and eventual completion of the projects will determine how quickly residents benefit from improved transport infrastructure and expanded access to electricity.
