Detectives have arrested a 25-year-old man after recovering 1,121 rolls of bhang hidden inside mobile phone boxes in a bag as he prepared to board a bus to Nairobi.
The suspect, identified as Titus Okware, was intercepted by officers from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) following intelligence that narcotic drugs were being transported to the capital.
According to the police, detectives acted on the tip-off and tracked down Okware shortly before he boarded a Nairobi-bound bus in Busia.
A search of his bag uncovered seven mobile phone boxes that appeared ordinary but contained no handsets. Instead, the boxes had been packed with 1,121 rolls of bhang, which police recovered as exhibits.
Officers arrested Okware at the scene and escorted him to Busia Police Station, where he was being processed ahead of his arraignment in court.
The recovery highlights the use of concealed packaging to transport suspected narcotics while attempting to evade law enforcement officers.
Police have secured the recovered drugs as exhibits as the case proceeds through the legal process.
